This next week is Science Night, Thursday, February 16th : Please plan on attending
from 6:00-7:30 p.m.
Science Night Feb. 16th from 6:00-6:30 p.m.
PreK-4th will be in the front lobby
5th and 6th will be in the multi-purpose room
7th and 8th will be in the cafeteria
Students will be leading activities related to our current Science Content: Organisms
Students should come to not only participate with their own grade level, but to have an opportunity to observe the work of other students. Come have some fun exploring science concepts with
our children.
On Tuesday, Feb. 14th at 2 p.m. Fourth Graders will have a visit from Aqua Man.
He will give a presentation about water conservation. Students will get a water kit to take home.
Fourth Graders have a Benchmark writing test this week as well. On Wednesday and Thursday,

In math we are working on area, perimeter, and volume. Students need to be able to use both the Metric and English Systems of linear measurement.
A review of using the planner went on this week in class, and students practiced how to use resource pages in the planner to help complete work and study. Most measurement units are on page five of the planner. It is expected that students can compare units of length, and choose the most practical unit for the situation. For instance you would use inches to measure the length of caterpillar, feet to measure the length of a room, and yards to measure a football field. Parents can help students with units for length, liquid , and weight by comparing sizes and quantities. Converting from one unit to another is another way to help with practice. For example: 3 gallons =____quarts or 36 inches=3 feet
Most students need practice with making change. Problems like this can be created and solved:
Fred bought a notebook for $2.49 and 3 pencils at $.25 each. If he gave the clerk a $5.00 bill, how much change should he receive? What coins or bills would you receive?
More Planner Practice Tips
Writing Tips and Spelling Tips are at the bottom of page 7 under Helpful Hints. Students should be practicing paragraph writing and the suggested study strategies for spelling. There are listed Troublesome Words on Page 6, that all students need to know.
Progress Reports will come home Wednesday, February 1, 2012. Please sign and return them.
Thanks,
Mrs. Carlson

Week of January 16-20th
Reminder: Monday is Martin Luther King Day, and students have a holiday. Enjoy your day.
We discussed in class the importance of Martin Luther King, and why we honor him on this day.
Spelling (Jan17-20): Vowel Sound in shout is sometimes written as ow in how
however, mountain, mound, scout, shout, couch, towel, ounce, coward, outdoors, flowerpot, scowl, browse, announce, hound, trout, drowsy, grouch, eyebrow, boundary
Frequently misspelled words: outside, house
Science Students are having fun making their terrariums. The terrariums will be used to experiment with variables as they explore how their plants survive in the ecosystem created. In labs we will be working with soil, seeds, variables, and continue developing the words on my last blog. Composting is important to create healthy soil.

UIL is an academic competition and the first one this year for elementary students will be February 25.
It is a Saturday, and a bus will be provided for transportation if your student competes. Only 4 students can act as a team in a division for the two competitions our 4th graders can enter. We will practice in our classrooms. The two competitions are:
Oral Reading: Students have 6 minutes to read a selection of poetry. The same selections can be read in each round. or
Ready Writing: Contestants are given a choice between two prompts, each of which defines the audience and provides the purpose for writing. The contestant will have two hours to write the composition.
Some 4th and 5th graders have signed up to practice on Thursdays for the ART SMART U.I.L. competition. this will be held also on February 25th at the same time.
Math Project Starting Soon: January23- February 3rd Students will be asked to locate pictures or take photos of geometric shapes and terms to make a Geometry Booklet. Begin now to find magazines to collect examples of parallel lines, intersecting lines, obtuse angles, acute angles, right angles, different polygons, and three dimensional shapes like types of pyramids, cylinders, types of prisms, transformations likes translations, rotations, and reflections. I will send home a complete list of geometric terms to include. The project is to work on vocabulary and recognize the use of geometry in our world.
Math Hint: Students need to show the steps and computations needed to get answers for their work.
If they will do this, it is easier for them to check for accuracy and reasonableness. Mental Math should not be the only strategy used.
